GRASSTOWNE

A new band formed by three well respected veterans in Bluegrass music ....
GRASSTOWNE WILL PERFORM OCTOBER CORSAIR CONCERT

GRASSTOWNE, a great country-tinged progressive bluegrass band from East Tennessee will be performing in Tawas City on Saturday evening, October 27th, as part of the Corsair Concert Series. The 7:30 pm concert will take place at the Tawas United Methodist Church Family Center.
Grasstowne is located near Knoxville, Tennessee. While Knoxville has long been known as the “Gateway to the Smokies,” Grasstowne has inviting signs at its city limits that proclaim “Welcome to Smokin’ Bluegrassville.” Although the town is fictitious, this new band is for real, loaded with a ton of talent in an all-star lineup. Grasstowne’s recent formation has generated much excitement, and the band’s debut album, The Road Headin’ Home, has ascended to the top of the bluegrass music charts.
30 years after first meeting, the stars have finally aligned for longtime friends, Steve Gulley, Phil Leadbetter, and Alan Bibey. Forming Grasstowne has been a long time dream for each member. As founding members of three highly successful bluegrass bands, the members of Grasstowne are now forging a new sound that is rooted in tradition while retaining some of the contemporary edge that their previous groups became famous for.
As a founding member of Mountain Heart, Steve Gulley recorded 5 CDs that earned him Male Vocalist of the Year nominations from the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America. He is well remembered from his early days as the voice of Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver.
Alan Bibey has made a name for himself as one of the most creative and technically gifted mandolinist in bluegrass and acoustic music. As a founding member of Quicksilver, IIIrd Tyme Out and BlueRidge, his tasteful innovations and pristine execution have earned him 3 International Bluegrass Music Awards. In early 2004, The Gibson Company unveiled The Alan Bibey Signature Series line of mandolins.
Phil Leadbetter’s face has been seen around bluegrass for years as a member of JD Crowe & the New South and Wildfire. His 2005 solo release, Slide Effects, was named the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Instrumental Album of the Year and affirmed that Phil was worthy of being named 2005’s Dobro Player of the Year. Phil is currently the only dobro player to have a signature series instrument with The Gibson Company, which has recently released a limited edition Phil Leadbetter Signature Series Dobro.
Joining the three veterans is banjo player, Jason Davis, who could be considered a veteran himself, at the age of 18, after having been a member of Michelle Nixon and Drive, the Kenny & Amanda Smith Band, and BlueRidge.
The newest addition is Jamey Booher on bass. Jamey began playing bass at age 14, with his family's band, "The Boohers", and quickly excelled in both playing and singing. Although he is only 20 years old, his musicianship and professionalism is that of someone twice his age.
Advance tickets ($15) for the Saturday, October 27th concert are available at Nordic Sports in East Tawas. Proceeds from the concert series are used to maintain and operate the Corsair Skiing and Hiking Trails in the Huron National Forest. For advance tickets and further information call (989) 362-2001.
