We are seeing birds an average of 10 days ahead of their normal arrival dates. Sunday (May 4th) we spent an enjoyable morning with friends at Tawas Point observing the migrants. Roger Eriksson took this photo of a Long-eared Owl. Normally highly elusive, secretive and nocturnal, this owl is a rare but local resident in the forests of Michigan. Note that the Long-eared Owl we are viewing took on an elongated pose, extending it's long ear tufts so as to almost become part of the branch on which it is perched, and thus hide in concealment. Click on the photo to see a larger image of the Long-eared Owl. Other noteworthy early migrants that we saw were .... Ruby-throated Hummingbird Baltimore and Orchard Orioles Cape May Warbler, Nashville Warbler, Pine Warbler, Palm Warbler, Black-throated Green Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler Blue-gray Gnatcatchers Shorebirds: Dunlin, Semipalmated Plover ![]() ![]() Hike and canoe with us on PBS Great Getaways.
