April 4th thru 12th was spent testing some of our outdoor clothing and equipment in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. A week of cold temperatures with deep snowfall at high elevations and heavy rain in the valleys provided challenging conditions. ![]() ![]() ![]() Spring Bird Migration
Birders wait all year for the month of May. Not only do we look forward to having the birds return, but we are very happy to know that the final remnants of winter have left. The Spring bird migration is a spectacular sight-and-sound show. Because the birds are looking for mates, they are in their brilliant breeding plumage. Bird song is abundant. Singing is a territorial declaration and a way to attract mates, so the birds are singing their hearts out. Also, they are visible. In the Spring, the trees are not fully leafed out. Without thick foliage, it's easier to see birds. On May 15th Roger Eriksson photographed this Painted Bunting near the Pine River, in Alcona County. There's no mistaking the aptly named painted bunting with its plumage straight from a preschooler's palette. The male is one of the most colorful songbirds in North America. The Painted Bunting spends Summers on nesting grounds in the Southwest U.S. The State of Texas is the primary territory for this species. This sighting in Michigan is extremely rare. ![]() AuSable River Fly Fishing ![]() May is a wonderful month for fly fishing on the AuSable River. We have been enjoying our evenings fishing for Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout. The abundant evening hatch during this season is the Hendrickson mayfly. While we are waiting for the insects to hatch, we switch our gear to larger rods and streamer patterns that imitate baitfish and small trout. The section of river from Mio downstream to McKinley is designated Quality Water for fly fishing. This stretch of river is often very remote and we fish from our drift boat which allows us to float through miles of prime trout water on each outing.
