The Corsair Trail Council will use the 50hp ASV Scout to pull some additional new grooming equipment that is currently being built for us by Yellowstone Track Systems in Montana. That's Ray and George in the cab testing the Scout in some deep snow conditions.![]() January 14th - Highbanks Trail ![]() January Thaw - the curse of skiers! Warm temperatures have created wet snow and diminished the depth. When this happens we head to the Highbanks Trail which follows the AuSable River. The Highbanks Trail features some outstanding views of Michigan's most famous river. The best panoramas are found along the section east of the Lumberman's Monument trailhead (skiing toward Sidtown). That is where these photos were taken. Currently the best snow conditions will be along the west section (skiing toward Iargo Springs).![]() ![]() We spent this evening skiing along the western rim of the Highbanks Trail. Today's bright sky faded softly into a warm sunset. The mild temperatures soften the snow during mid day and the cooler evening temperatures firm it up into a solid crust, providing fast and fun cruising conditions. Last Sunday's rain and 40º temperature dissolved a lot of our snow. Current temperatures are back in the deep freeze and the moist melting snow has re-frozen into a very hard crust base. The resulting snow is too frozen and solid to recondition with the groomer. Last week's groomed ski tracks eroded in the melt down and the tracks that remain are solidly frozen into the hard base. With a quarter inch of fresh snowfall on the trails last night, I skied around a few of the Silver Valley loops this morning. ![]() There are no bare spots and no grey ice. Conditions are very fast and the snow is extremely hard, providing no cushion for a tumbling fall. A snowfall of several inches is needed to return to good skiing conditions. Until then ... ski with caution and avoid areas with fast downhill runs. I have posted two photos that were taken this morning at Silver Valley. One picture shows the worst section of trail. The other shows the best section. Click on each photo to view a larger picture. ![]() ![]() Hike and canoe with us on PBS Great Getaways.
